Burial Services

When someone you love passes away, having clear guidance can make a difficult time a little easier. Burial services give families the chance to come together, reflect, and honor a life in a meaningful way. At Baue Funeral Homes, we walk with you through every step, helping you create a service that feels personal, dignified, and true to your loved one.

On this page, you’ll find an overview of the burial services we offer. If a loved one has passed, please call 636-940-1000 to speak with a funeral director. They will guide you through the next steps and answer any questions you may have.

Traditional Burial Service

A traditional service often includes a visitation with the casket present, followed by a funeral ceremony and procession to the cemetery for burial. This option provides time for extended family and friends to gather, share stories, and offer support.

When burial is chosen, a cemetery must also be selected. If arrangements have not already been made, we are here to help guide you.

St. Charles Memorial Gardens is located on the grounds of our Baue Cave Springs location, offering families the convenience of services and cemetery options in one peaceful setting.

Graveside Service

A graveside committal service is a ceremony held at the cemetery, typically at the burial site. It may take place instead of a traditional funeral service or follow a service held at a church or funeral home.

Graveside services are often more intimate and brief, providing family and friends an opportunity to gather, share prayers or readings, hear meaningful words of remembrance, and say their final goodbyes in a peaceful outdoor setting.

Burial Following Cremation

Cremation and burial can also be combined. After cremation, an urn may be placed in a cemetery plot, mausoleum, or columbarium niche, providing a permanent memorial location for family and friends to visit.

Families may choose to hold a graveside or committal service at the time of burial, creating an opportunity for gathering, reflection, and remembrance. This option offers the flexibility of cremation while still establishing a lasting place of honor and tribute.

Green Burial Options

A green burial is an environmentally conscious option that emphasizes simplicity and sustainability. Biodegradable caskets or shrouds are used, and no embalming chemicals or non-natural materials are involved, allowing the body to return naturally to the earth.

At Baue, we can coordinate with cemeteries that offer green burial options. St. Charles Memorial Gardens provides a hybrid approach, giving families the opportunity to honor their loved ones in an environmentally conscious way. A cemetery specialist at St. Charles Memorial Gardens can discuss available options and find the best fit for your family.

Personalizing a Burial Service

Every life is unique, and every service should reflect that. Personal touches might include favorite music, photo or video tributes, military honors, cultural or faith traditions, or keepsakes that hold special meaning.

During the arrangement conference, our funeral directors take the time to get to know your loved one so the service truly reflects their life. Families are encouraged to bring meaningful items—quilts, artwork, hats, uniforms, or mementos from travels—that help personalize the space.

Our team coordinates these details with care, allowing families to focus on being together and honoring their loved one.

Choosing a Cemetery

Choosing a cemetery is an important decision for honoring your loved one. Consider location, accessibility, and the type of burial—traditional, cremation, mausoleum, or family plots.

Look at costs, maintenance, and rules for monuments or markers to ensure the site remains a peaceful place for years to come. The atmosphere and reputation of the cemetery are also important—peaceful, well-kept grounds and caring staff make a difference.

For families in St. Charles County, St. Charles Memorial Gardens provides a serene and welcoming space to remember your loved ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a Burial Service?

A burial service typically includes the care and preparation of your loved one, along with the opportunity for a visitation or viewing, if desired.

Families may choose to hold a funeral service in our chapel, at their place of worship, or in another meaningful location.

Following the service, a graveside committal takes place at the cemetery, where final words, prayers, or personal tributes can be shared.

  • When should I select a cemetery?

We can help you explore available cemetery options if arrangements have not already been made. However, we encourage families to make a decision before or during funeral arrangements whenever possible.

At the time of arrangements, we review cemetery requirements for burial and associated costs. If a cemetery has not been selected during that meeting, our team can finalize the details at a separate appointment.

  • Can we have an open-casket service?

Yes. Many families choose a visitation with the casket present, though this is always a personal decision.

  • How long do funeral arrangements take?

Funeral arrangements typically take two or more hours. During this time, our funeral directors guide families through service options, casket or urn selection, cemetery arrangements, required paperwork (including death certificates and Social Security notifications), and personalization choices. We take the time needed to answer questions and ensure every detail is handled with care and clarity.

  • Is there a way to simplify funeral planning?

Preplanning is always the best way to ensure every detail of a funeral is carried out exactly as you wish. When preplanning isn’t possible, these decisions are made during funeral arrangements.

If you would like to begin the process of preplanning, our Family Service Directors are here to help. Please reach out by clicking the link below to get started.

  • Can I have a non-religious burial service?

Yes. Burial services can be as religious or non-religious as a family chooses.

Some families in St. Charles prefer a church service led by clergy. Others choose a certified celebrant to create a personalized ceremony focused on stories, memories, and meaningful moments. The tone of the service reflects the life being honored.

  • What is embalming, and is it required?

Embalming is the process of temporarily preserving a body using chemical treatments. It helps maintain the appearance of your loved one for viewings or visitations and slows the natural processes the body undergoes after death.

Embalming is not required by law in most cases. At Baue, we encourage embalming when a public visitation or service is planned, as it allows for proper care and preparation. When embalming is not selected, refrigeration is used to ensure the body is properly cared for until the service or burial. Our funeral directors can explain your options and help you decide what is best for your family.
