Theodore (Ted) Haddon Crayne, age 94, passed away September 18, 2014 at 12:50 p.m. at his daughter and son-in-law's home. Ted was born June 28, 1920 in Ridgeway, Illinois to Fred and Lillie (Gass) Crayne. He married the former Eunice Marie Honaker and October 18, 1941. She passed away on October 3, 2009.
Ted spent his early life in Shawneetown, Illinois until the flood in 1937 forced his family to relocate. After high school, he held various jobs including a period with Douglas Corporation in Tulsa, Oklahoma and for the Santa Fe Railroad in Gallup, New Mexico.
Ted served as a Seaman 1st Class in the United States Navy. He was stationed aboard the USS Landing Ship Tank (LST) 937 in the Philippine operation during World War II. When he left the military, he took a job with Alvey Conveyer then later with McDonnell Douglas where he retired in 1982 after 31 years of service.
In 1959, Ted and Eunice moved from St. Louis to St. Charles where they resided for 31 years.
Ted was an avid motorcyclist and he and Eunice toured the U.S. and Canada on their Harley's. They actively participated in motorcycle associations and rallies. He was Director of the Gateway Region of Retreads for 14 years.
In 1990, they moved to London, Arkansas and spent 19 memorable years together riding, fishing and enjoying the company of friends.
After the death of his wife, Ted made his home at Villa Rose in Bethalto where he made many friends. He enjoyed the entertainment provided to the residents by his son-in-law Gene and always asked to hear Gene's rendition of 'Wildwood Flower'.
Ted is preceded in death by his parents and wife of 68 years.
Ted is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Donna Crayne of Centre, Alabama and a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Gene Maynard of Bethalto. Ted is also survived by a sister-in-law, Penny Carter, a niece, Patty Overfelt and great niece Melissa.
