Sherman Lee Blackwell, of O’Fallon, MO, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at the age of 81. Beloved husband of Brenda Loyce Blackwell; cherished son of the late Otha Leamon and Edith May Blackwell; devoted father of Shelly (Gary) McCutchen, Shelby Lee (Katie) Blackwell, and bonus children, Ron (Michelle) Ormsby, and Kristi (Joey) Kratky; dear brother of Debbie (Mike) Syers; loving grandfather of Sholena (Brandon) McMahon, Kyesha Blackwell, Kylee (Nick) Banks, Ashleigh McCutchen, Savannah Blackwell, and bonus grandchild, Mellissa Hein; treasured great grandfather of 9.
Sherman proudly served in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1964 as an aviation machinist. He married the love of his life, Brenda, on July 3, 1965, in Dixon, KY, and together they built a beautiful family. After working for Chrysler, Sherman spent 21 years with Eastern Airlines before transitioning to the O'Fallon Fire Department, where he began as a volunteer firefighter in 1987 and was later hired as a career firefighter in 1989. He retired in 2008 as a fire inspector. Sherman had a passion for riding motorcycles, watching Westerns, antiquing with Brenda, and woodworking. He was deeply involved in his children’s lives, coaching their sports teams, and excelling as both a father and husband. Known for his willingness to help others and his candid nature, Sherman also loved hunting and fishing, passing on those skills to his grandkids, who shared countless special moments with him. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Memorials may be made in Sherman 's name to the Backstoppers or a Military Organization in his honor.
