Samuel Louis McElya Jr., of O’Fallon, MO, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2026, at the age of 81. Beloved husband of Sherry McElya; cherished son of the late Samuel Louis, Sr and Eileen McElya; devoted father of Stephen (Melissa) Heskett, Russell (Samantha) Heskett, Melinda (Bart) Alspaugh, and Stephanie (Christopher) Mangiapane; loving grandfather of Devyn (Chase Webb) Heskett, Kortnie (Jonathon) O'Brien, Jarred Kues, Kendall Heskett, and Ashley Kues; great-grandfather of Maxine Webb and Sophia O'Brien; dear brother of Laurie McElya; and his dearly loved companion, his cat, Elvis. Samuel is preceded in death by his grandchild, Morgan McCall Heskett, and his sister, Mary Ellen Gregory.
Samuel grew up in O’Fallon and was a member of the final graduating class of Assumption High School, an experience he carried with pride throughout his life. He went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Army, demonstrating a deep sense of duty and commitment. Samuel was awarded a Bronze Star, Air Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Metal and Vietnam Counter Offensive Campaign Medal. He remained active in his community as a past Commander of American Legion Post 1831 in DeSoto, where he formed lasting friendships and continued his service to fellow veterans. Married to the love of his life for 51 years, Sherry was very special to Samuel. He had a great love for the outdoors, especially hunting, and took pride in maintaining his yard and property with care and dedication. A natural collector with a curious spirit, Samuel always seemed to have a plan, and a backup plan, ready for whatever came his way. He enjoyed watching the weather and always updating his family with the daily forecast. He found joy in bringing people together, often hosting family and friends for warm, laughter-filled BBQ gatherings. Samuel was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral Services for Samuel will be private.
Memorials may be made in Samuel's name to St. Jude.
