Phyllis Gerleen Roemer, born on July 7, 1934, in Reynolds Station, Kentucky, to Casper and Maudie Voyles, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026. Her final days were spent under the compassionate care of Hope Hospice in San Antonio, surrounded by the steadfast love of her daughter and family. Relatives traveled from across the country to be at her side, each able to share their goodbyes and the deep affection she inspired throughout her life. During this time, her granddaughter Leah provided devoted hands-on care, assisting Roland and Kathy with Phyllis’s medical and physical needs. Kathy’s son Paul offered steady support to his mother and to visiting family members.
Phyllis was raised in Owensboro, Kentucky, in a home built by her father. She grew up alongside her four brothers, Basil, Walter, Joseph, and Casper Jr., and her two sisters, Loretta Rather and Ray Etta Robbins. Her parents, shaped by the hardships of the Great Depression, instilled in their children the enduring values of honesty, hard work, and resilience.
While still in high school, Phyllis met the love of her life, Thomas Christian Roemer Sr. The story of their first date at a skating rink became a cherished family memory, marking the beginning of a marriage that would span more than six decades. Together, Tom and Phyllis built a life devoted to family and service. They worked tirelessly to support their growing household, encouraged their children’s academic and athletic pursuits, and modeled the principles of determination, kindness, and unwavering family loyalty. These values continue to guide the generations that follow.
Phyllis and Tom raised four children: Bruce, Tony, Mike, and Kathy. Each went on to serve their country in the armed forces. Tom retired from the United States Marine Corps. Bruce and Mike served in the United States Navy. Tony served in the Marine Corps. Kathy built a distinguished career in the United States Air Force and retired at the rank of E9, Chief Master Sergeant. Phyllis carried immense pride in their service and dedication.
Phyllis spent many meaningful years living in St. Charles, Missouri, where she was surrounded by family and the community she knew well. She remained deeply connected to her children throughout her life. She always knew where they were, how they were doing, and what was happening in their lives, right up until her final days. Her devotion to her family was constant and defining. In her later years, she shared a close and supportive bond with her daughter-in-law, Luz Roemer, who lived with her and provided daily companionship and care. Together they enjoyed gardening, television shows, and the gentle rhythm of everyday life. Luz’s presence brought comfort, laughter, and a steadfast devotion that enriched Phyllis’s final years.
