'Getting to Know One of Our SCB Homebound Members'
Marie Baumann was born on May 6, 1922 in Flint Hill, Missouri. She was the youngest of six children. Her siblings were Agnes, Tillie, Bill, Isabell and Ollie. She attended SCB and was a straight A student. Her music teacher was a first year teacher, Sr. Mary Arthen, who, many years later, taught her grandchildren here at SCB. She enjoyed playing on the playground and is proud of the fact that no windows were ever broken when they played! She sang in the children's choir under the direction of Ms. Ehrhardt. Since her family lived on Benton Avenue, she walked to school every day. When she was 14 years old, her father died from cancer. Before she married, she worked for several years at Sacred Heart Academy in Housekeeping. She met her husband Glennon at the Brown Shoe Factory where they both worked. They were married in 1942 at SCB by Fr. Fallon. They had 5 children, Glennon, Tom, Carolyn, Ann and Paul. She now has 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. While her children were growing up and attending SCB, she took care of the altar linens, washing and ironing them weekly. This job was given to her by Msgr. Owens. After her husband died in 1973 she volunteered in the gift shop at St. Joseph's Health Center for 20 years. Later she enjoyed working at Grandma's Cookies. She has always enjoyed dancing and playing pinochle. She is known as a very hard-working woman and definitely a 'people person.' She is still able to live in her home on Jackson (where she has resided for the last 63 years) with the help of her son Paul. Every Thursday she spends the day at Tom (son) and Mary Baumann's home. Her other children and grandchildren visit her often.
