Karl T. Young

October 4, 1975 — January 2, 2026

Maplewood

Karl T. Young of Maplewood, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2026 at the age of 50. Cherished brother of Kristine “Krisy” (Lewis) Dickinson, Kurt (Sara Bearden) Young, and Keith Young. Adoring uncle to Dashel Dickinson, Alec Dickinson, Waelyn Henderson, and Yoonah Robidoux. Beloved nephew of Ernest Allen, Carol Young, Sharon Breen, and Susan (Michael “Mike”) Abrams. Dearly loved cousin to a large family. Proud stepfather to Wayne Canoog. Lifetime friend to countless people who journeyed along his path. Karl was preceded in death by his father H Thomas “Tom” Young and mother Linda R (nee Allen) Young.

Karl began his career at BJC while still in high school. He graduated Salutatorian of his class from Lutheran High School Saint Peters in 1994. Karl then went on to UMSL Pierre Laclede Honors College and UMSL earning bachelor's degrees in Chemistry and Biology. After completing his degrees, he worked as a Medical Technologist and finally as a stem cell Cryogenic Preservation Specialist at Barnes Jewish Hospital.

Karl's voracious appetite for knowledge, however esoteric, is legendary. His keen interest with myriad subjects knew no boundaries as a child and never faded as an adult. He overcame incredible obstacles with his health. Karl often warmly recounted his adventures when he traveled across the US and abroad. He frequently authored observations and varied opinions which were published in the Saint Louis Post-Dispatch. He delighted in educating and inspiring his beloved nephews and nieces to use critical thinking, broaden literary engagement, and explore historical artists and composers.

During his life, Karl explored all corners of knowledge, particularly his love of classical music. Karl's knowledge of classical music was on par with some of the best music scholars, and he was always on the hunt for music new to him. Karl was especially fond of Franz Josef Hayden and knew all of his 106 symphonies. Although Karl once referred to himself as a “self-taught dilettante,” there was nothing dilettante about his thirst for knowledge. He is sorely missed by everyone blessed to have loved and known him.
