Julius Andrew Hummel Jr of St Peters MO passed away February 8, 2024, at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his parents Julius and Marie (Deters) Hummel, brother & sister-in-law Herman & Joyce (Robertson) Hummel of Bowling Green, Missouri.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Jo (Veulemans) Hummel, 4 children and 5 grandchildren; Julius Andrew Hummel III of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Grant & Sarah (Hummel) Johnson of Rochester, Minnesota, Dylan & Deborah (Hummel) Newman and their children Magnus, Maliah and Ella of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Brian & Theresa (Hummel) Panka and their children Julia and Gavin of Arnold, Missouri.
Julius was the oldest of 11 siblings. His surviving siblings: Ed & Mary Anna (Hummel) Sick, Eugene & Marie Therese (Hummel) Niemeyer, Christopher & Bridget (O'Brien) Hummel of Bowling Green, MO, Robert & Diane (Thyson) Hummel of Wardsville, MO, Martin & Mary Ellen (Chance) Hummel and John & Catherine (Stolzer) Hummel of Russelville, MO, Blandina (Hummel) Miller of Columbia, MO. Dorothy (Hummel) Andrae of Kansas City, MO, and Bob & Eva (Hummel) Jones of Fulton, MO, as well as over 50 nieces and nephews, their children and grandchildren.
Julius was born January 22, 1945, in Louisiana, Missouri. He graduated from St. Clement Grade School and Bowling Green High School. He proudly served in Vietnam as a Marine in the rank of Sergeant. He earned a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Missouri, Columbia.
He began his career working in logistics, then became fascinated with computers. He worked at various companies including McDonald Douglas, Monsanto and BF Goodrich. Additionally, he taught MS-DOS at community college. Upon retirement, he enjoyed a third career as a Fort Zumwalt School bus driver for 10 plus years. Julius’s lifelong passion was spending time in the woods, either hiking or camping, or tending a backyard bonfire. He was actively involved with the Boy Scouts serving in various leadership positions spanning three decades. He most enjoyed leading scouts on two-week high adventure backpacking treks to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He logged over 15 treks, including trips with each of his 4 children, passing his passion for the outdoors on to them.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to All Saints Catholic Church in St. Peters, Missouri, or the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Julius Hummel.
