John R. Lanier

August 22, 1952 — July 7, 2025

O'Fallon

John Raymond Lanier, age 72, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous 12-year battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Born on August 22, 1952, John was the youngest child of Reverend Isaac Houston Lanier and Aileen Wilson Lanier. He grew up alongside siblings David, Joyce, and Paul, often living the spirited life of a preacher’s kid with a sharp wit and warm heart. His sense of humor remained a constant source of joy to all who knew him.

John earned his degree in Political Science from Eastern Kentucky University, where he also joined the ROTC. He was commissioned into the U.S. Army in 1973, launching a distinguished 20-year military career. As both an aviator and Military Intelligence officer, he served with honor across the U.S. and overseas, including assignments in Korea, Germany, and two tours in Special Operations. A skilled helicopter pilot, John was a proud early member of Task Force 160, known as the "Night Stalkers,” providing elite aviation support for special operations missions.

In 1991, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and later served in St. Louis, Missouri, as Assistant Project Manager for the Army’s Blackhawk helicopter program. He retired from military service in 1994 with numerous honors and commendations.

That same year, John met and married the love of his life, Nancy Christiansen. Despite not being a dancer, he managed to win over Nancy—a talented swing dancer—at a Catholic Singles Dance. They married just six months later and built a joyful life together. John became a devoted husband and stepfather to Nancy’s children, Aaron and Cortney, whom he treated with kindness, respect, and unwavering patience.

After retiring from the Army, John worked in program management roles for nearly two decades before being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013. He responded with strength and grace—joining Rock Steady Boxing, participating in classes with the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, and continuing to enjoy golf, travel, and time with loved ones. John and Nancy made lasting memories on vacations to both cherished and bucket-list destinations.

During his illness, the support of their neighbors became a powerful blessing. What began as casual connections blossomed into deep friendships and daily acts of love—rides, meals, companionship, and kindness that helped John live his final years with dignity and joy.

John will be remembered most for his gentle soul, quick wit, and steadfast love for family and friends. He never raised his voice, never lost his temper, and always met life with calm humility. He loved deeply and lived generously.

He is survived by his beloved wife Nancy; stepchildren Aaron and Cortney; brother Paul; and many extended family members, dear friends, and fellow veterans.

John spent his final days exactly as he wished: at home, surrounded by love. His life was a beautiful example of devotion, humor, service, and grace.

A memorial service will be held at Baue St. Charles Memorial Gardens, 3950 W Clay. St. Charles, MO. 63301 on July 23, 2025, at 9:30am.
