John H. Nolle

January 23, 1930 — May 29, 2017

Nolle, John H., 87, of St. Charles, Missouri, May 29, 2017. Beloved husband of the late Ethel Nolle; cherished son of the late John W. and Lenore Nolle; devoted father of John A. (Barbara) Nolle and Marie (Darryl) Haupt; loving grandfather of Jessica Nolle, Charity (Shaun) Reed, Eva (Brad) Kanouse, Renee (Jason) Henke, Ben (Maggie) Haupt, and Abby (Nathan) Wissmann; treasured great-grandfather of Natalie, Jay, Jonah, Joseph, Isabelle, Flynn, and Murphy; and dear brother of the late Bernice Phillips. He was also a loving uncle, cousin, and friend to many.

John lived a rich, full life, with the love of his life, Ethel. He was a farmer, a school bus driver for Francis Howell School District, delivered water with his water truck, and drove a truck for Hackmann Lumber for 37 years. He was also a shop steward for over 30 years for Teamsters Local 682. Even though he had other jobs he never gave up his love of farming. He always had cattle, pigs, and horses (for his children) and put up hay.

He loved baseball and basketball, which he played in high school. He coached his son’s baseball, daughter’s softball, and the church’s basketball teams winning many first-place trophies. He extended his love of baseball/softball by being a member of the R-III Baseball Association and the C&H Athletic Association for many years. He was an avid bowler for over 60 years winning many awards including gold, silver, and bronze medals at the Senior Olympics. His most prized award was being inducted into the St. Charles County Amateur Sports Hall of Fame for bowling in 1991.

Pinochle was a big part of his life, playing with friends and family often. He and Ethel taught their children and grandchildren how to play the game. When their grandchildren started bringing their girlfriend/boyfriends and then husbands/wife they were taught to play the game too. There was always a game or two of Pinochle when the grandkids came to their home or down at the Lake of the Ozarks.

He loved camping with his family, fishing, frog gigging, and having crawdad boils around the campfire. He also enjoyed summer vacations driving his pontoon boat on the Lake of the Ozarks and watching his kids and grandkids skiing. He and Ethel traveled all around the country with their camper pulling a Volkswagen Beetle. They also enjoyed cruises, trips to Alaska and Hawaii, and bus trips with their friends in Hermann.

He loved building things and working with wood. He built his own house with the help of his dad and many barns and sheds on his farm. He would make furniture for friends and family and decorative pieces for houses to sell for Hackmann Lumber.

He was devoted to his church serving on the church board and many other committees. He sang in the church choirs for over 50 years. He was always there if a project needed to be done or charities needed a donation. He would give the shirt off his back if they needed it.

He was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He deeply loved his family.
