JoAnn Hoover Johnson, beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on May 4, 2025. She was the devoted wife of the late Julius H. Johnson Jr. and a loving mother to her two children, Julius and Meredith. JoAnn is also survived by her close cousins: Linda, Larry, Cindy, Hillary, Matt, and Todd Hoover, who were an integral part of her life.
JoAnn was born on March 5, 1942, to Louise Eleanor Leach and James Lester Hoover in Delaware County, Ohio, and spent her childhood in the town of Sunbury. Always quick with a laugh, she had a knack for making everyone around her smile, whether with a well-timed joke or her infectious sense of humor. A proud graduate of Big Walnut High School, she went on to study at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She later earned a degree from The Ohio State University, where she honed her talents in both music and her ever-sharp wit.
Music was at the heart of JoAnn’s life. A gifted pianist, organist, and piano teacher, she believed that music, like life, should be filled with joy and a little bit of humor. She ran a private piano studio for many years, where she taught students of all ages. She was always pleased and proud to see how the gift of music continued to enrich their lives, whether through performance, teaching, or simply a lifelong love of music.
JoAnn’s career in education spanned over 45 years. She brought her warm, witty, and compassionate nature to every role she held. She began as a guidance counselor at Bryant Junior High in Kivonia, Michigan, in 1968. From there, she moved to Willis Intermediate School in Delaware County, where she fondly remembered the students and faculty she counseled. In 1983, she transitioned to Hayfield Secondary School in Fairfax County, Virginia. She later retired after more than 20 years at Wentzville Holt High School in Missouri. Her ability to bring a smile to even the most difficult situations was legendary, and she will be remembered for how she made learning fun, with plenty of laughs along the way.
JoAnn was always deeply proud of the students she helped throughout her career. She was often touched when former students would recognize her in public and share how well they were doing in their lives. Their success brought her great joy, knowing she had played a part in their journey and that they carried her guidance with them into adulthood.
Beyond the classroom, JoAnn had a deep love for gardening, especially flowers. Her garden, always full of color and life, was a reflection of the care and creativity she brought to every part of her life.
JoAnn’s legacy will be defined not only by the many lives she touched through her work and music, but also by the laughter, joy, and lighthearted moments she brought to each day. She made lifelong friendships wherever she went. Her ability to connect with others was a testament to her warmth and generosity of spirit. Her deep friendships, which spanned decades, and her unwavering love for her family will be missed by all who had the privilege to know her.
