Winfield, Missouri

Joan A. Bartley (nee Nixon), of Winfield, MO, passed away Thursday, December 25, 2025, at the age of 84. Precious wife of the late George Leo Bartley. Cherished daughter of the late Marie and Norman Nixon. Beloved daughter-in-law of the late W.E. Jr. and Ednamae Bartley. Dear sister of the late Norma (James) Moranville, and the late Jean (Dennis) Grant; treasured sister-in-law of the late W.E. (the late Grace) Bartley III, and Tom (the late Chaille) Roberson. Devoted aunt of Chaille (Walt) O’Neal, Judith (Don) Meier, Charles (Becky) Bartley, John Leo (JoAnne) Bartley, Carol (Andy) Edgington, Joseph Grant, Mary Grant, Stephanie Grant, Jennifer (Jacob) Bolzenius, and loving great aunt.

Joan was a person who loved her family and friends, but above all in her life, she loved three things greatly. The first was her marriage to the love of her life, her husband George. Joan spoke often of her fond memories with George, and used her life experiences with him as a wife and partner to guide her decisions all of her life.

Second, Joan came from a family that valued education and was a proud recipient of Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. Joan devoted her life to teaching. Over her 35 years of teaching high school English classes, she impacted countless students. Her high standards and care for students navigating advanced literature and writing classes encouraged students to achieve goals for themselves both in her class and in higher education.

Finally, Joan loved animals and was always concerned for their well being. Birdwatching was one of Joan’s favorite pastimes. Joan’s love of animals included her horses, her golden retrievers, and her cats who all responded to her loving care with companionship.

Joan will be missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Joan's name to Guide Dogs for the Blind.
