James Ancel Lewis, a dedicated United States Air Force retired veteran and lifelong advocate for education, passed away peacefully at home on November 2, 2024, in St. Paul, Missouri, at the age of 87, surrounded by his wife and children. Beloved husband of Mary Lou Lewis; cherished son of the late Toney Lee and Nannie Ollie Lewis. Devoted father of Joni L. (John) Pukala and Tony L. (Rachael) Lewis; loving grandfather of Whitney (Mike) Masters, Grayson (Holly Meyer) Lewis, Courtney (Tim) Reichert, Christopher Lewis, Bailey (Erik) Johansson, and Stacey (Blake Goewert) Pukala; treasured great-grandfather of Harvey, Edison, Cade, and Isabel; dear brother of Velda Ebert and Walter (Charlotte) Lewis; beloved uncle, cousin, and friend. Preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Lewis, Marvin Lewis, and Donald Lewis; and sister, Irene Lewis.
Born on March 3, 1937, and raised in Glover, Missouri, James grew up with a strong sense of duty and commitment that would define his life’s work.
After graduating high school in 1956, James enlisted in the United States Air Force. He returned to Arcadia Valley when his sweetheart, Mary Lou Lewis graduated. On February 21,1960 they married and became inseparable. They lovingly raised their two children, moving as a family of four to live in three countries and five US states. James taught us that home was anywhere the family is.
James served his country honorably for 20 years, including a year in Vietnam -specializing in aircraft munitions maintenance/becoming an instructor, and then later recruiter. His technical skills, professionalism, and mentoring earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike. Upon retiring from military service as a Technical Sergeant, James returned to civilian life, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience.
James earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, which paved the way for his second career. He applied his education and expertise in human resources, working for several distinguished companies, including Emerson Electric and the McDonnell Douglas Corporation. Known for his integrity and commitment to excellence, James contributed greatly to these organizations, helping to develop partnerships between universities and industry for student coop and job placements.
In his final professional chapter, James and Mary returned to their hometown where he became an instructor in the Lesterville, Missouri, School District. His work there embodied his commitment to service and education, leaving a lasting legacy for the generations to follow.
During his retirement years in Ironton Missouri, Jim spent time fishing with his wife, brother, and close friends. He also enjoyed staying in touch with friends by traveling to 79th TFS Air Force reunions, woodworking, gardening, sports and spending time with his family. He served as his grandkids and great-grandkids biggest fan, often attending their numerous sports and milestone events. A passionate fan of basketball and baseball he rarely missed the Arcadia Valley Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament or a St. Louis Cardinals game.
His life is a testament to the power of love and commitment, whether to his family, service to his country, his career, or his community. He never met a stranger and he loved us all well.
Until we meet again, rest in peace.
Memorials may be made in James' memory to the charity of their choice.
