Herbert W. Baden

December 27, 1927 — September 26, 2018

Herbert Walter Baden is asleep in Jesus. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on September 26, 2018 at the age of 90 in St. Charles, Missouri of complications from bladder cancer.

Herb, as he was known to all, was born on December 27, 1927 in Cheyenne, Wyoming to Walter Albert and Alma Emilie Baden (née Brommer). He graduated from St. John’s College high school at Winfield, Kansas in 1946.

Herb served his country proudly as a United States Marine twice in 1946-1948 and 1950-1951, and in the Marine Corps League after he retired. Throughout his life Herb was active in many congregations as a Sunday School teacher, Elder, School Board member, and Walther League.

Herb and Joan "Jody" Rose Schaefer were married on August 29, 1953 at St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Missouri. Herb and Jody lived in Altamont, Illinois as newlyweds and then moved to Branson, Missouri. They returned to Altamont in 1962 where Herb managed the very first Stuckey’s candy store on an interstate highway. In 1966 Herb and Jody moved to Rolla, Missouri where they owned The Mule Trading Post on I-44, retiring to St. Charles, Missouri in 1997. Where ever Herb lived he remained a loyal Cardinal baseball fan.

Herb is survived by his beloved wife, Jody, of 65 years; two children, Karen Crider of St. Charles, Missouri, Kurt (Martha) Baden of Prescott, Arizona; four grandchildren Byron (Eileen) Baden, Matthew (Karen) Crider, Peter (Jessica) Baden, Samantha (Zach) Valentine; two great granddaughters, Lillian Mae Crider and Edie Eliza Baden; three sisters Eleanor (Bob) Droege, Elise (George) Locke, and Wilma (Paul) Droegemueller; and ten nieces and nephews. He was a treasured cousin and friend to many.

Herb was proceeded in death by his parents, two brothers, Alvin and Theodore; and one granddaughter, Caroline.
