Harlan H. Schutte, 98, of St. Charles, Missouri, formerly of Dubuque passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at Assisted Living at The Meadowlands.
A memorial service will be held at Baue Funeral and MemorialCenter, St. Charles, MO on May 30, 2014. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
Harlan was born on May 14, 1916, in FredericksburgIowa, son of Henry and Vonia (Moldenhauer) Schutte. He graduated from MarshalltownHigh School in 1936. He entered military service with the Army on June 6, 1942 rising to the rank of Captain. He served in Africa, Italy, France, Germany, and Austria with the 932nd Field Artillery Battalion as an Intelligence Staff Officer. He was awarded the Bronze Star with V for heroic actions taken during battle. Following the war, he returned to Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1947. He also served his country during the Korean War from 1952 to 1953 with the 10th Mountain Division at Camp FunstonKansas and the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
On November 8, 1947, he married Patricia A. Haught at Summit Congregational Church. They were together for 66 years until Pat passed away September 23, 2013.
Harlan was employed at Carr, Adams and Collier from 1947 to 1976 and at Jeld-Wen Fiber Products as Research Development Director until his retirement in 1984. He served as president of Schutte Consultants from 1984 to 2002.
Harlan was a member of Grand View United Methodist Church, Y's Men Club, National Management Association, American Legion, Post 6 of Dubuque, Isaac Walton Club, Dubuque Rifle and Pistol Club. In addition he served on the Board of Directors of the YMCA.
Harlan enjoyed telling war stories with Army buddies, big game hunting and fishing in Wyoming, travel, dining out, square dancing and spending time with his family.
Surviving are his daughter, Kathryn Ferring, grandchildren Melissa Howe and Todd Ferring, three great-grandsons, Carson Howe, Brayden, and Chase Ferring, all of St. Charles Missouri and a brother-in-law, Roy Haught, of Peosta, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Honor Flight of Dubuque or Greater St. Louis Honor Flight.
