Gloria Esther Pickens Essig, beloved spouse, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of faith, family, and fellowship. She was born on November 1, 1938, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Willard and Wilma Pickens, who preceded her in death. Gloria was the eldest of four siblings Willard, Eileen, and Joyce — all of whom have also passed.
Gloria married George Rudy Essig at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Missouri on August 31, 1963. Gloria was the proud and devoted mother of Mark Essig; Kristie Ward with husband Rob and their sons Nicholas and Jackson; and Kimberly Thiele with husband Christopher and their children Chloe and Lance.
Her grandchildren affectionately called her "Grandma Darlin," a name that captured her warmth, spirit, and loving nature. She treasured time with her family, especially during her favorite holiday, Easter, when she joyfully gathered generations together to celebrate.
A woman of deep faith, Gloria was active in her church community throughout her life. She participated in Ladies Aid, Lunch Bunch, volunteered regularly in the church office, and founded numerous fellowship groups dedicated to building connection and joy among congregants. Even after making 13 major moves throughout her life, Gloria returned to her hometown of St. Louis in 1999, where she continued her ministry of hospitality and friendship within her church family.
She was a gifted seamstress who delighted in sewing and embroidery, often creating beautiful garments from scratch - without the use of a pattern. Gloria had a passion for planning gatherings, playing card games, and bringing people together around a table to share food, laughter, and love.
Gloria's life was a testament to the power of kindness, creativity, and community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Zion Lutheran Church, in honor of Gloria's lifelong commitment to fellowship and service.
