Emily Julia Aida (Carlson) Smith, age 78, passed away peacefully at Garden View Care Center in O’Fallon, MO on Sunday, September 10, 2017.
Emily was born August 11, 1939 in the county of Mille Lacs, Minnesota. She was the daughter of the late Carl Axel Carlson and Emma Katrina (Olson) Carlson. She married C.J. Smith, her second husband, in 1973, and the two of them enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family and friends. Emily retired from SSM Health after working for 15 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in O’Fallon, MO.
Emily is preceded in death by C.J. Smith (husband), Carl and Emma Carlson (parents), Raymond Edes (son), Carol Carlson (sister), W.B. Smith (brother-in-law), and Goldie Smith (sister-in-law).
She is survived by her sister Carlleen Carlson of Duluth, Minnesota, her children June (Edes) Balcom, Michael Smith and wife Hollie, Sharon Turner, Cynthia Smith, Diana Edes (daughter-in-law), her sisters-in-law Mary, Wanda, and Edna, and her grandchildren, Justin Balcom and wife Michelle, Shawn Edes and wife Chelsea, Melanie Bradshaw, Scott O’Dell and wife Heather, Joshua O’Dell and wife Megan, Kaila Smith, Kendell Benisch, Michael Benisch, Bon Turner, Ashleigh Turner, Laura Ring and husband Aaron, Ariel Furst, David Furst, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Emily was a housewife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, a sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin, niece, and friend to many.
She was loved by everyone who had the joy of knowing her. Her love for her family will shine through in the years to come with the memories of what a compassionate woman she was.
She will be missed, but will live on in the hearts of all of us.
