Dr. William Henry Poggemeier, Jr.

Dr. William Henry Poggemeier, Jr.passed away in his sleep at home on September 5, 2013. He was born on Feb 8, 1924 in Crystal City Missouri to William H. Poggemeier, Sr. and Cloa Scheniman Poggemeier, and was the 2nd of their three children. He graduated as valedictorian from Crystal City High School in 1941. He then attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and graduated in 1944.
He received a Master's Degree in Chemistry from the University of Illinois, and served 1 year in the United States Army as a chemist. He then entered the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago.
After graduation from the University of Illinois School of Medicine, in 1951 he came to St. Charles, MO, where he joined Dr. George Kister in General Practice. He joined the staff of St. Joseph Hospital in 1952. He remained in practice in St. Charles, until his retirement in May of 1998.
In 1956 he married Eunice Wilke, a native of St. Charles County. They have 3 children, Dr. David Poggemeier, Jean (Steve) Ehlmann, and Lois Jordon, all of St. Charles, as well as six grandchildren, Elise Poggemeier, Brendan Ehlmann, Paige Poggemeier, Will Ehlmann, Reid Poggemeier, and Claire Jordon.
As a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, he served as an elder, and served on the board of the Immanuel Lutheran School. He greatly enjoyed his many years singing in the choir at the church. He served for a time on the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Family and Children's service.
Dr. Poggemeier was involved in many professional activitites, including volunteering as a physician in a medical clinic in Kinloch, MO, and the Volunteers in Medicine clinic in St. Charles. He additionally was the Staff Physician for the Emmaus Home in St. Charles for over 30 years. He greatly enjoyed music, traveling, and spending time with his family. He was a member of the St. Charles County Medical Society, and he was elected an Honorary Vice President of the Missouri State Medical Society at their annual meeting in April of 2013. After the American Board of Family Practice was established in 1969, Dr. Poggemeier was a member of the first group to sit for the exam, successfully becoming one of the first to be Board Certified in the new specialty of Family Practice.
For many years he served on the faculty of the University of Missouri School of Medicine as a preceptor for medical students from the School of Medicine in the month-long community medicine rotation.
After 46 years of practice, Dr. Poggemeier retired in May of 1998. He spent his retirement years, traveling, watching his grandchildren grow, reading, and watching Cardinals baseball.
In addition to his family mentioned above, he is survived by his sisters, Mary Flo Schunks of Crystal City, Missouri, and Esther Ruth Jabs of Corvallis, Oregon, his sister-in-law Ruth Woodland, his aunt Viola Poggemeier, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
