David Frederick Poertner was born in St. Charles, MO, October 1, 1940, to Vernon and Evelyn (Luetkemeyer) Poertner. He peacefully passed from this life on September 17, 2026.
Dave demonstrated a great work ethic and was dedicated to all that he did: devoted husband (64 years), father to 3 (60+ years), tool designer at McDonnell Douglas/Boeing (51 years), card club (40+ years), church volunteer (60+ years), Lutheran School Board President, Indian Guides, Boy Scout Leader, and perennial 2nd-place finisher at Family Game Night. He was a life-long Lutheran, a member of Immanuel St. Charles, 1940-1961 and 1973-2025, and Our Savior St. Charles, 1962-1972. His faith was evident to all. He was known for punctuality. Dave loved to laugh, had a quick wit, and, in fact, may just be the original dad joker.
David is survived by his wife Dr. Grace (Schwane) Poertner; children Daniel (Debbie) Poertner, Timothy Poertner, and Sarah (Michael) Popp; grandchildren Hector, Robby, Samuel, Andrew, Richie, Kallub; his great-grandchildren; niece Julie (Darrel) McDowell; multiple Schwane in-laws, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, etc.
David was preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Evelyn (Luetkemeyer) Poertner; sister Elizabeth (Poertner) Hancock; grandparents Fred and Alma (Budde) Poertner, Oscar and Bertha (Moentmann) Luetkemeyer; aunts and uncles including Howie and Cecelia Luetkemeyer; in-laws Rev. Walter and Helen (Kramer) Schwane as well as many cousins and second cousins.
Memorials may be made in David's name to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
