Catherine C. Van Herreweghe

April 20, 1936 — January 19, 2020

Van Herreweghe, Catherine “Cass” Carol Pesek, passed away on January 19, 2020 at the age of 83. Cass was preceded in death by her husband James “Jim” Prosper Van Herreweghe, and siblings Elizabeth Pesek, Jack Pesek, Virginal Nolda, Mary Lee Pesek, Kevin Pesek, and Larry Steven Pesek.

Born April 20, 1936 in Nebraska to Myrl Pesek (nee: Mahoney) and John Pesek. She started out as a farm girl in Ravenna, Nebraska but moved to the “big city” of Lincoln after graduating from high school.  She stayed home when her kids were young but retired from a satisfying career as a civil servant working with military personnel records for the Department of the Army.  Many congressional presidential staffers contacted “Mrs. Van” on behalf of their constituents because she was conscientious about resolving issues on even the hardest cases proving eligibility for benefits and awards.

Cass married Jim on September 13, 1958 and they raised three children together. James P. Van Herreweghe, Christa (Dave Dixon) Van Herreweghe and Sidney Van Herreweghe. She enjoyed the lives of her grandchildren, Tara Overby, Karry (Rafael Matos) Van Herreweghe, Laura (Justin) Deatherage, Mona (Jake) Krohn,  Jennifer (Josh) Morales, Michael Van Herreweghe, Megan Richter (fiancé Dan Chase) and Joseph Van Herreweghe. Great-grandchildren Gavin, Krystofer, Jordan, Anna and Logan. She loved a good party and made a mediocre party better by spearheading conga lines and hula hoop contests.  She knew how to improve any situation with her wit and sense of humor.  She was a great story teller and passed on her innate curiosity to her family.  She was interested in almost everything and always learning new things.

In retirement she enjoyed the escapades of her grandchildren and they cherished her advice and her company.  We loved her for so many reasons and appreciated her support of even our wackiest schemes.

Private services will be held. Do a good deed today in memory of Cass.
