Betty Louise McClendon

Betty Louise McClendon (née Nicholson) left this earthly home on September 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedicated service. Born on October 22, 1944, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Christine and Lilbert Nicholson, Betty discovered her calling to help others at an early age.In 1966, her passion led her to St. Louis, Missouri, to attend the Homer G. Phillips School of Nursing during an era when local training options for African-American nurses in the South were heavily restricted. Graduating in 1968, Betty held the historic distinction of being a member of the school's very last graduating class—an honor she carried with immense lifelong pride throughout her nursing career.

As a young adult, Betty accepted Christ and became a dedicated observer.

Betty was the absolute life of the party, illuminating every room with her bubbly personality and sharp sense of humor. She loved music of all types, often singing melodies to her young children and her deeply cherished grandson. She spent countless hours sharing animated stories, spreading hospitality, and offering gentle, selfless care to everyone she met.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Christine and Lilbert Nicholson, as well as her sisters, Delores "Lois" Estelle Nicholson Gilliam, Mildred "Mia" Carmeene Nicholson, and Cherly Elaine Nicholson.Her memory will be lovingly kept alive by her three children, Mark Wesley Clayton, Nishelle (Keith) Bailey, and William Randolph Clayton; her grandson, Kameron Bailey; her brothers, Dean Nicholson Sr. and Walter Nicholson; her sisters, Loretta Bruner and Charlotte (Bill) Ridgeway; alongside a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
