April 12, 1939 — February 20, 2022

Bernard "Bernie" A. Rains, of Wentzville, MO, passed away Sunday, February 20, 2022, at the age of 82. Loving husband of 57 years to Kathy Rains; beloved son of the late Joseph A. and Orene C. Rains; devoted father of Pat (Sharon) Rains and Lisa Pierce; cherished grandfather of Mallory (Dan) Lavin, Travis (Mary) Pierce, Megan Pierce, Melissa Pierce, and Erica Rains; treasured great-grandfather of Margot Lavin, Harper Lavin, Danny Lavin, Hadlee Pierce, and Walker Pierce.

Bernie earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Systems and Data Processing, and a Master of Science from Washington University. He was extremely intelligent and always continued to educate and challenge himself, going on to obtain his pilot’s license.

Bernie served in the United States Army. He was a retired environmental engineer with 40 years' experience in controlling pollution of St. Louis waterways. Bernie wrote about wastewater and storm water issues. Since retiring, he had become a freelance writer of articles of wildlife, food security and other subjects.

Bernie was a member of St. Charles River Church where he assisted with audio/visual and was an usher. He loved to read the Bible. Bernie had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed gardening and photographing wildlife. He loved to fish, and he and his son went to fishing tournaments together. Bernie was a true outdoorsman and craftsman who shared his skillsets with his children and grandchildren. He could build or design anything he set his mind to do. In his free time, Bernie played pool and loved to draw, but most of all, he truly cared for his family, always putting them first, and was prepared for anything. Bernie was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
