Barbara Canty Gossow

September 9, 1935 — March 19, 2024

St. Charles, Missouri

Barbara Canty Gossow of St. Charles, MO, passed away on March 19, 2024 at the age of 88. She was born on September 9, 1935. Preceded in death by beloved husband Robert Francis Gossow and dear parents Dr. Eugene Joseph Canty and Dorothy Emmons Canty. Survived by her children Ellen (John) Lockhart of Phoenix, AZ; Doug Gossow of St. Louis, MO; and Amy Gossow of Brooklyn, NY, as well as her grandchildren Kate (Derek) Jones, Olivia (Christopher) Boone, Charlotte Lockhart, Benjamin Gossow, Cecilia Gossow, Josephine Gossow, Sterling VanRy and Jules VanRy; and her great grand-daughter, Nina Moon Jones. She is also survived by her brother Tom Canty and nephew Scott Canty.

Robert and Barbara were married November 14, 1959 in St. Charles. Barbara attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart and graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, MN in 1957. She began graduate studies in history at the University of Wisconsin, Madison before being swept off her feet by Bob (though she would have you believe it was because her thesis topic, which relied solely on primary source material in French, was too difficult).

A lifelong Democrat, Barbara had a fierce intellect and shared a love of opera and classical music with her husband. She was an avid and competitive bridge player, enjoyed writing the occasional letter to the editor of the Post-Dispatch, and served on her alma mater’s reunion committee.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests her memory be honored with memorials to Trinity Episcopal Church, 318 S. Duchesne Dr, St Charles, Missouri 63301, or the charity of your choice.

A private service will be held.
