Sharon I. Schafer Young

February 22, 1942 — October 5, 2019

Sharon I. Schafer Young of O’Fallon, MO, passed away at the age of 77 on Saturday, October 5, 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irl and Geraldine Schafer.

Sharon is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Vincent “Pete” Young; her children, Kimberly (Dave) Stinnett and Martina (Scott) Fulton; her grandchildren, Wilson Fulton, Bailey Fulton, Bradley Stinnett, and Sophia Stinnett; her dear aunt, Catherine Taylor; and extended family and friends.

Born in her grandparent’s country home in Scott County, IL to the late Geraldine Beatrice Taylor Schafer and late Irl Schafer. She grew up on a farm near Alsey until age 15 and then moved to Winchester, IL.  She moved to Jacksonville, IL in 1962 and worked at the Hertzberg Book Bindery.  She moved to Florissant, MO in 1964 and in 1965 met Pete at a bar, they were married June 11, 1966.

They lived in Moberly, Bridgeton, Macon, Hazelwood, Florissant and O’Fallon, MO.  Sharon got to be a stay home mom to Kimberly (Young) Stinnett and Martina (Young) Fulton until she started working at McDonald Douglas from 1984-1997.  Sharon became a grandma in 1997 and got the fun chance to start watching her grandchildren full-time: Wilson Fulton ‘97, Bailey Fulton ‘99, Bradley Stinnett ‘00 and Sophia Stinnett ‘01.

As a young girl growing up on the farm, Sharon loved her horses.  She had many interests which kept her active – she belonged to a bowling league in her younger years, she played softball, was a member of the 4-H Club, and liked to go out dancing.  Sharon was active in her church and enjoyed participating in many of the events held there.  She could be found every day in front of her TV watching Days of Our Lives, her favorite soap opera that she devoted her afternoons to.

When she and Pete retired, they liked to travel together to destinations such as Hawaii, Florida, Mexico, and other parts of the country.  Sharon will always be remembered as a wonderful wife, dedicated mother, and loving grandmother and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Contributions in Sharon’s name may be made to Evelyn's House, Shriners Hospitals for Children, or Siteman Cancer Center.
