On February 26, 1929, John and Levora Meyer gave birth to a baby boy they named Richard Meyer. He was one of six children. Rich spent his early years living with his family in south St. Louis. In 1931, the family moved to Catfish Island in St. Charles County. Rich’s dad would take the kids by boat across the river to a field and from there they would walk to a little one room school house (Francis Howell School). Rich loved to tinker with things and had a knack for fixing almost anything that was broken.
Rich was a Korean War Veteran having served in the U.S. Marine Corps from August 1, 1950 until his discharge in April 7, 1952. From there, Rich went to work for McDonnell Aircraft Co. where he worked for 35 years. Rich met his first wife, Skip, while they both worked at McDonnell Aircraft Co. They were married on February 14, 1953 and together they had four children; Dawn, Jan, Robin and Rick. After his retirement Rich and Skip enjoyed traveling around the country and around the world visiting Hawaii, Alaska, the Panama Canal, England, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean Islands. Skip went to be with the Lord on January 27, 2006. Rich met Shirlee Mercer at church and on October 27, 2007 they were married. They enjoyed road trip around the country, traveling abroad and spending time with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Rich had many interests and was very involved with a variety of church ministries. He served with the bus ministry at both First Baptist Church of Ferguson and then with First Baptist Church Harvester. He was very involved with “Think About Tomorrow”, the TV ministry at First Baptist Church of Ferguson. After joining First Baptist Church Harvester he served as a Deacon, he served on the Board of Stewards for several years and for many, many, many years Rich was the full time bus driver for his senior adult group, Young at Heart, Carpenters for Christ mission trips, young adult and youth mission trips and retreats.
Rich loved working on his farm. When he wasn’t driving the bus for church, he was driving his tractor around the farm; plowing the field, grading the road or pulling trees up from the woods to be split for fire wood.
We all have fond and unique memories of Rich, dad, grandpa and great and it would be sad if they ended here. However, we have confidence that, by God’s grace, through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ Rich is in heaven today with a healthy body, mind and voice praising our heavenly Father. We know it would be his prayer that you have this same faith and grace and meet him in heaven when it is your time.
