Kwai “Bessie” Huen Chiu

September 20, 1933 — July 14, 2021

Kwai “Bessie” Huen Chiu of St. Charles, MO was born in Canton, China on September 20, 1933, and made her journey to Heaven on July 14, 2021, at the age of 87.  Loving wife of the late Chun Choi Chiu; beloved daughter of the late Ching Ko and Mo-Ching Tao.  While living in China, Kwai had three children, one daughter and two sons.  In 1966, Kwai and her family made their journey to the United States to begin a new life.  Shortly after settling her family in St. Louis, she gave birth to another daughter.  Kwai was a nurse in China, and after moving to the United States she wanted to continue her love of nursing.  While working on her nursing certification she opened a Chop Suey Restaurant, then Hong Kong Restaurant and Asian Imports Gift Shop. After she passed her nursing certification, she was a Charge Nurse at Normandy Hospital, and then at Des Peres Hospital, retiring from nursing in the early 90’s.  After retirement Kwai continued her passion for caring for people by working for a home healthcare company assisting senior citizens.  Kwai had a passion for people and a strong work ethic which was instilled in her four children.

In her free time, Kwai enjoyed playing Mah-Jong with her friends and going to the casinos.  Family was a huge part of her life, whom she loved dearly, especially her children and grandchildren. She lived her remaining years under the care of her daughter Bing and family, where she was comfortable at home. Kwai was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

Kwai was preceded in death by her husband Chun-Choi Chiu and parents Ching Ko and Mo-Ching Tao.

Kwai leaves with cherished memories of her beloved children: Mon (Joseph) Downs, Ning (JoAnne) Chiu, Wai (Pam) Chiu and Bing (Kevin) Dempewolf-Arnold.

Grandchildren: Natasha (Carlos) Rios, Michael Downs, Brandon (Lacey) Chiu, Mike (Amy) Dempewolf, Jon (Nicole) Dempewolf, Lauren Dempewolf (Late Kenneth Blair), Anthony Dempewolf, Kaden Arnold and Kameryn Arnold.  Her grand pets Barkley, Bailey and Cooper.

Great grandchildren: Reagan and Makenna Rios, Cali Chiu, Max and Charlie Dempewolf, Conner Olson, Brianna, Maelynn, and Jonathan Jr. Dempewolf, Andre Montemayor, and Jessiah Blair.

Siblings: Ko Kwai Fong, Gao Han Wen, Gao Han Ting, Hong-Chung Ko, Hon-Yim Ko, Hon-Sheung Ko, Kwai-Fun Ko, Hon-Sum Ko, Hon-Kit Ko, and Kwai-Ming Ko.

Most importantly, she was loved by Jesus Christ of Nazareth for He was her Savior and she believed on His Name and promises so that she now has eternal life in the one who gave it all for her.  Hallelujah and Amen.
