Jerry Bert Christensen, 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 28 at Progress West Hospital in O’Fallon, Missouri surrounded by his family.  Rude’s Funeral Home of Brookings, South Dakota is assisting the family with the arrangements.  The funeral service will be private.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests making a donation to a charity of your choice in his name.

Jerry was born in Rapid City, South Dakota on June 12, 1940.  He is the son of Clarence and Margorie Christensen.  During his early life, his family moved around South Dakota before finally settling in Brookings where his family owned a small grocery store called Hillcrest Market.  He was a baptized and confirmed member of the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church.  He graduated from Brookings High School in 1959 and from South Dakota State University with a degree in Print Management in 1964.  He met his wife, Justine, while working as a fry cook at the Corral Drive-In on 6th Street.  Justine was a carhop.  They were married at First Lutheran Church in Brookings on August 13, 1960.

Throughout their life, Jerry and Justine lived in a number of cities including St. Paul, MN; Jonesboro, AR; Covington, TN and South Bend, IN before settling in retirement in Lake St. Louis, MO to be close to their children and grandchildren.

Jerry was an active outdoorsman engaged in activities like canoeing, biking, jogging, cross country skiing and golfing.  He loved walking on the sandy beaches of Florida, the hotter the better.  He was a skilled marksman and spent many enjoyable days hunting ducks and pheasant with his son.  He was proud of his South Dakota farmland and no matter where he was living, managed to visit at least twice annually during planting or harvest season.  Jerry never turned down the chance to play cards, especially Whist, Euchre and Poker.  He was a wonderful storyteller with the topic of many of his best being his adventures while growing up in South Dakota.  He never met a stranger and thought nothing of engaging those nearby in friendly conversation. “Grandpa Jerry” was an enthusiastic supporter of his grandchildren, rarely missing a game or school event.  He was an active member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in O’Fallon, Missouri.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Justine, of Lake St. Louis, MO; two children, Kortney (David Goeke) of St. Louis, MO; and Eric Christensen (Trina) of O’Fallon, MO; his brother, Jim Christensen (Linda) of Barhamsville, Virginia; and two grandchildren, Ben and Olivia Goeke.
