C. Mike Lesch of O’Fallon, MO, passed away at the age of 77 on Wednesday, September 11, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Virgie Lesch.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Jo Ann Lesch; his children, Dale Lesch and Cindy Barry; his grandchildren, Samantha (Tyler) Schurwan, Brandon Barry, and Katie Barry; his great-grandchildren, Eris and Lilith; and his sister, Pat (Noel) Eberle.

Mike earned his bachelor’s degree at SEMO and his master’s degree at SIU Carbondale before going on to teach science at the Riverview Gardens and Fort Zumwalt School districts. He retired from that role after a long, successful career of making a difference as an educator. He had a passion for nature and, in addition to owning a tree farm, Mike spent as much time as he could either hunting, fishing, gardening, hiking, or collecting minerals. Mike was a member of both the American Tree Farm System and the National Education Association. Traveling with his wife, Jo Ann, and enjoying their trips together were always some of the highlights of his life. Mike will always be remembered by his family as a man who had a kind word for everybody, was well-liked by everyone he met, and as a devoted grandfather who was greatly involved his grandchildren’s lives. He will be dearly missed.

Contributions in Mike’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Prayers for the whole Lesch family. Mike was the best guy to have as a neighbor! He was always ready to help with anything or just keep an eye on things when we were gone. Mike was a great resource for tree and yard advice as well. Mike will be truly missed by many, many people. I wish I could be at the visitation or the funeral but I’m out of town until the middle of the week.
Sincerely, Jim, Bridget, Emily, Aly and Sam.

Was that even necessary? You are not related nor even know him.

Mikel Lesch was the best teacher I ever had. He was my 8th grade Earth Science teacher back in the early ’70s. To this day I remember more of what I learned from him than I did from anyone else. My love of rocks & minerals began with him and continues. I remember how proud he was when the Leschs brought home their first child. He showed photos to everyone he saw. He also spent his own time after school helping a small group of Girl Scouts work on a Weather badge. He was truly an amazing and unforgettable man.

I was sorry to hear of Mr. Lesch’s passing. Like Karen Kreienkamp Clodfelter, he was my eight grade Earth Science teacher. For the past several years I wished I could find him to tell him that he was the best teacher I ever had. I am sorry I have lost that opportunity. Although he was great at teaching astronomy and weather, he was fabulous with our studies of rocks and minerals. As a non-science major, in college, I aced a Geology course. Every advantage I enjoyed was due to Mr. Lesch’s teaching skill. I will always remember his kindness and his passion for teaching.
