Bruce D. Large

October 10, 1932 — January 31, 2017

Bruce Derr Large, of Saint Charles, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at the age of 84. He was the beloved husband of 60 years to Darlene D. Large; cherished son of the late Walter F. Large and the late Rachel Derr Large Kooker (nee: Marcks); devoted father of Dirk L. Large, Letti L. (Todd) Becker, and Raja K. (Suvendra) Daggumalli Dutta; loving grandfather of Elsie Becker, Dirk Becker, Arunendro Dutta, and Rajendro Dutta; and dear brother of Lawrence N. (Elizabeth) Large and Debora Large (W. Larry) Kauffman. Bruce is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and numerous dear friends across the globe.

Bruce was born and raised in Eastern Pennsylvania. After high school, he proudly served his country in the 148th Fighter Squadron of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He earned his Bachelor and his Master of Science Degrees in Dairy Science from The Pennsylvania State University. While there he joined the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. His first job out of college was with a dairy, Leche Carabobo in Caracas, Venezuela, during the Revolution. Upon his return to the U.S., he worked for Breakstone Foods in New York; then for a dairy in Chicago, IL for several years; and then worked for Profit Management and Development Co. where he was a highly sought after Dairy Consultant. He also worked for Weavers Poultry in Lancaster County, PA for over 20 years, where he started as a Processing Plant Manager and was eventually promoted to Director of Research & Development. In the later years of his career, he travelled to over 50 countries as a Private Contractor for DuPont Protein Technologies International and then a Senior Consultant for NSF – Cook and Thurber. Most recently, he was honored by The International Food Science Certification Commission with the title of Certified Food Scientist.

Outside of the work listed above, Bruce devoted 35 years of his life to the orphanage organization Homes of the Indian Nation (HOINA), founded by his wife Darlene, where he served as a board member. Bruce was also an active member, choir member, and ordained Deacon of First Baptist Church of St. Charles; a member of the Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief group; and a charter member of the Manheim Township Sunrise Lions Club. Even though Bruce was a very busy and ambitious man, he always made time for his family and friends. All of those people, whose lives he touched, will fondly remember him for his wonderful sense of humor and generous heart. Bruce will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Homes of the Indian Nation (HOINA), P.O. Box 636, Brownstown, PA 17508.
