Rev. Dr. J. Bruce Melton

The Rev. Dr. J. Bruce Melton, former St. Louis pastor for 23 years, died Tuesday, 3-10-20 at home.   He was 92 and lived in retirement with his wife in St. Charles.  Melton was a pastor for 9 years at Glendale Presbyterian, Glendale (1958-1967) and 14 years at Christ Presbyterian, Moline Acres (1967-1981).  He retired in 1993 as Pastor Emeritus of the Arcadia Avenue Presbyterian Church, Peoria, IL.

Melton was a 1948 graduate of William Jewell College in Liberty, MO, and a 1951 graduate of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Kentucky. In 1964, he served simultaneously as President of the Kirkwood and Webster Groves Ministerial Associations. An Eagle Scout with Gold Palm, in 1973 Melton served as Chaplain of the St. Louis Eagle Scout Association. In 1976 he received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Tarkio College in Tarkio, MO.

More recently, he served the City of St. Charles as a member of the Fair Housing Commission [1994-2013], the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission [1955-2020], and two terms as President of the St. Charles County Clergy Fellowship.

Melton was born and raised in Kansas City, MO. Following seminary graduation, he served Presbyterian Churched in Petersburg and Greenwood, IN, before being called to Glendale Church.

He was married to Frances J. Nekuda for 69 years.  She survives, along with a daughter, Jeanie Meyer (Mel) of St. Peters, MO; two sons, the Rev. Richard B. Melton (Ruth) of Knoxville, TN, and Geoffrey R. Melton (Colleen) of Manchester, MO; 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dardenne Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund.
