Abernathy, Jr., Lucian H., of St. Charles, MO, died on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at the age of 88. Beloved husband of 71 wonderful years to Imogene (nee: Jackson) Abernathy; devoted father of Dianna (Larry) Gean of Dupo, IL, Sheila (James) Gallamore of Columbia, IL, and Brett (Lillian) Abernathy of Gallatin, TN; loving grandfather of David (Mary) Gean, Mark (Sheryl) Gean, Susan (Gary Jenkins) Gean, Deanna Gean, Michael (Kim) Blankenship, Robin (John) Kampmeinert, Deborah (Tim) Middleton, Joshua Abernathy, Anthony (Macy) Abernathy, Daniel (Amanda) Abernathy, and Rebecca Abernathy; cherished great-grandfather of 26 and great-great-grandfather of 4; dear brother of the late Shirley June Ward. Lucian is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Lucian was born in Elizabethton, TN on November 2, 1927 to the late Lucian H. and Clara (nee: Ainley) Abernathy, Sr. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1945-1946. For his service, he was awarded the American Theater Victory Medal. He went on to work for the Missouri Pacific/Union Pacific Railroads for 38 years as a carman and various other positions at several locations before retiring in 1988 as the General Director of Car Equipment. He also volunteered at Powell Terrace Food Pantry for approximately 14 years. After retirement, Lucian attended Missouri Baptist University in his late 60’s where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree.

Lucian was a devout Christian who raised his family to follow in his footsteps. He was a deacon of the First Baptist Church in Dupo, IL, Wichita, KS, Omaha, NE, and more recently, the First Baptist Church of Harvester in St. Charles, MO. He taught Sunday School for many years and served as a superintendent. He went on mission trips to spread the word of God and sang in a church quartet.

Lucian was a member of the Rob Morris Chapter #98 order of the Eastern Star in Fairview Heights, IL, the American Legion in Creve Coeur, MO, and a 35-year continuous Shriners International Member of Ainad Shriners in East St. Louis, IL. Lucian was a member of the Grand Lodge of Louisville, KY, a Mason of the state of Illinois since 1951, East Lodge #504 in Fairview Heights, IL for 50 years, the Gideons International, the National Geographic Society, and the Missouri Pacific Railroad Association.

Lucian had many great accomplishments throughout his lifetime, but his greatest was his family. He was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
