Joseph E. Ryan

Fr. Joseph E. Ryan of St. Peters, Missouri, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2018, at the age of 93. Beloved son of the late Joseph A. and Cecelia Ryan; dear brother of Dennis (Sandra) Ryan, Mary Louise Herbst and brother-in-law of Don Lael; and loving uncle of many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Fr. Ryan is preceded in death by his sisters Eileen Lael, Rosemary Bangert, and Bernice Krupp, and brother Glennon Ryan.

Fr. Joseph Ryan was ordained on May 3, 1951 by Most Reverend Joseph Ritter, then Archbishop of St. Louis. His first assignment was to assist the pastor of St. Joachim Parish of Old Mines, MO. After a few months there, he became a member of the Knights of Columbus in Bonne Terre, MO and the following year he was named assistant to St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Pagedale, MO.

Fr. Ryan saw the call for experienced priests for La Pas, Boliva and volunteered for the mission in June of 1958. He and other priests were then later given charge of St. Augustin in Viacha. After five years, Fr. Ryan was re-assigned to start a new parish in Arica, Chile. In 1970 he went to Caracus, Venezuela as an associate of Maryknoll until 1975 and remained with the Archdiocese of Caracus until 1985 as pastor of the parish of La Navidad del Senor. Fr. Ryan moved from Caracus to the Island of Margarita where he attended the villages of fisherman until 1988 when he returned to St. Louis.

He was assigned to Sacred Heart Parish in Crystal City, MO where he received the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus. He retired to Sun City Center, Florida in 1994 and became Chaplain of council 7282 at Prince of Peace Parish, and Chaplain of Assembly 1850 in Brandon, and Chaplain of Council 11830 at St. Lawrence Parris in Tampa and District Friar. In 1998 he moved to Palmetto and last served as Chaplain of Holy Cross Council 7414. He worked in various parishes in Florida before ending his ministry at St. Francis Cabrini in Parish, FL.

Fr. Ryan was deeply loved and will be immensely missed by all who knew him.
