Jewell Mates

Jewell Mates (nee Tyner), of St. Charles, Missouri, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2020 at the age of 83. Beloved wife of 62 years to Joseph Mates; cherished daughter of the late James and Mamie Gutherie Tyner; devoted mother of Suzanne (Bob) Pea; Mike (Jaimee) Mates and Steve Mates; loving grandmother of Ryan Mates, Bobby Pea and Nick Pea; dear sister of Nell Krohn and Jim (Peggy) Tyner and the late Leonard Tyner; treasured aunt of Jeff (Jennifer) Tyner and Jonathan (Lauren) Tyner; Jewell is also survived by many friends.

Jewell was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Cottleville. Jewell and Joseph met in Washington D.C. while serving at the Marine Corps Institute as instructors where she was a legal court recorder and he was an aircraft maintenance specialist. They were married on December 30, 1957. She was a voracious reader and an amazing cook. Jewell loved going for walks and caring for her grandchildren.

Jewell was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
