Janace Maclin

October 31, 1951 — August 14, 2018

Janace Maclin was born October 31, 1951 to Ike Sr. and Mildred Hatchett in Brinkley, Arkansas. After graduation from Woodruff High School, she sought higher education by earning a Bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University. After completing her certification in Elementary Education K-12, Janace began her career as a Social Worker and Lead Investigator for Family Services in Peoria Illinois. Janace married Ricky Maclin in Peoria, IL in 1974, and from this union, they had two sons, Michael and Timothy. Together, Ricky and Janace became ministers at Star of Hope Full Gospel Baptist Church, where she was the first woman minister. In addition, she was the second woman in the United States to be ordained in the Full Gospel Fellowship. In 1987, they relocated to St. Louis, Missouri to pastor Bethesda Mennonite Church, there she became the first woman to be ordained in the Mennonite Southwestern Conference.  She was the Lead Pastor alongside her husband at Bethesda Mennonite Church for 14 years and later moved on to be on the ministerial team for Destiny Church in Town and Country, MO. As a faithful member of Bethesda, she wore many hats in the ministry, she served as the Christian Education Director, member of the church council, choir, the Women’s Fellowship co-organizer, instructor of the Children’s sermon, vacation bible school teacher, evangelical bible study instructor, private tutor for some of the Bethesda children, co-counselor for married couples and instructor for the Women’s Bible Study.

She obtained two Masters degrees, an MA in Education in 1995 from Maryville University in Chesterfield, MO and MA in Guidance and Counseling from Lindenwood University, St. Charles, MO in 1998. She spent 20 years shaping the future of youth in the University City School District as an elementary school teacher at Hawthorne Elementary School, a guidance counselor at Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School and ultimately retiring from Jackson Park School. Janace’s passion for education and serving others remained strong even through her retirement, she became an online Professor at Missouri Baptist University and ministered to the residents at Mary Ryder Nursing Home in her spare time. She was known for her temperance and tenacity and being a true warrior for Christ, praying every morning on the phone even with members of her church even in the midst of her own pain. She will be remembered for her patient heart of gold and her calming spirit. She leaves a legacy of two young men raised also in faith, by faith, with faith in God; who truly admire her commitment to others and the love she gave to them. Her spirit was infectious, she leaves behind an imprint of faith, love and hope. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
