Loving wife of 59 years to Francis Machens; beloved daughter on of the late Frank and Mary Ann "Mamie" Alfred; devoted mother of Derrill (Karla) Machens, Elaine (Dick) Rufkahr, and Donna (Billy) Kaufmann; cherished grandmother of Kurt (Tammy) Machens, Kevin (Shelley) Machens, Kara (Paul) Reynolds, Peter Kaufmann, and Jacob Kaufmann; treasured great-grandmother of Tiffany, Taylor, Kylie, Landry, Lily, Kali Jane, and Krew Ruben; dear sister of Opal Runde. She was preceded in death by her infant son, Douglas Kevin Machens; her siblings, Ruben Alfred, Lucille "Sis" Wehmeyer, Gen Miller, Berniece Machens, Pearl Richterkessing, Roy "Bud" Alfred, and Millie Schrader.

Glady was the wife of a farmer and spent much of her time helping and keeping up to date on what the crops were doing. She was a devout Catholic and was a lifetime member of St. Francis Assisi in Portage Des Sioux. She was very active and served with the Ladies Sodality and Church picnic among other things. She liked to quilt, sew, and garden in her free time, but most important to her was her family. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

We are so sorry to hear about Gladys’s. We got to know Gladys at Parkside and were always enjoyed talking to about her family and her farms her two great loves. My mother in law sat at her table for about three years. We will miss those conversations with her very much.

My sympathy to the family. I, too, was born in Black Walnut and attended the school there with Gladys and her siblings.
I visited Gladys in 2013 when my husband was in Parkside. We enjoyed talking about the old days.

Glady had a presence about her that radiated life! What I remember most about her is her laugh and her service to our church. She was always at our church functions working, participating and mingling! She had the gift to mingle and make people smile.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Machens family during this time of sorrow. May the wonderful memories of her life help you through this sad time!

To the Machens family. We had the pleasure of renting the old farm from Francis and Gladys back in 1976 & 77. Your parents were the kindest people. They were always willing to help anyone out. Francis would get us out when the snow drifted across the gravel road. Gladys was always smiling and so sweet. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. They were very special people.

Please accept my sympathy and extend it to your family. I have been receiving more and more notices of the passing of friends and relatives of others. We’re in that generation now. Take good care of yourself and your family.
    May God bless you all.
