Gilbert “Skip” Howard Penfold, Jr, .of St. Peters passed away on January 28, 2017 at the age of 78.
Skip was born in Flushing, NY to Gilbert and Ruth on October 8, 1938. He moved to St. Louis in his early childhood and married Judith Junge on December 6, 1958 in St. Clair, Illinois. Skip retired, having been employed as an iron worker with Iron Workers Local 396 for 60 years; during his career he helped build the St. Louis Gateway Arch and other prominent St. Louis structures. Skip was a member of the Sons of the Amvets Post 106. He also was the head of the Sad Sack 601 which provides scholarships for aspiring nurses. He organized the Golden Triangle horseshoe league, including the first all women’s league in the state of Missouri. He was a coordinator in the first national senior Olympics held at Washington University for horseshoes. He was an avid photographer and animal lover.
Skip is survived by his wife, Judith (nee Junge): his children Jay (Mary) Penfold, Kimberly Purgahn, and Gina (Mitchell King) Penfold: his siblings Gary (Barb) Penfold, Bev (Jim) Nevels, Carol (Guy) Barr, Jeff A. Penfold, and Tanya (Brandon) Cuppy: and his grandchildren Cindy Purgahn, Melissa Kincaid-Land, Lindsay Penfold, Nick Purgahn, Myles Penfold, Elizabeth Penfold, Samuel King, Annamaria King, Christina King, and Jack King. He will be sadly missed by his 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his son Jeffrey P. Penfold, and his parents Gilbert, Sr. and Ruth Penfold.
