Born in St. Louis, MO to Fred Leslie Newman, Sr. and Rose Laura Newman (nee: Kamper), Fred was an only child who lived with his parents and grandmother. He attended Normandy High School where he met the love of his life, Marion Gross. They were married in 1948 for 63 years. They moved from Florissant MO in 1969 and made their home in St. Charles MO with their children.
During his career, Fred developed, designed and co-owned numerous cemeteries in Missouri. He was also active on many professional boards. He was the past president and board member of the Greater St. Louis Cemetery Management Association, Associated Cemeteries of Missouri, and was a three-time elected member of the board of directors of the American Cemetery Association, now known as the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association (ICCFA) from 1972-1974, 1976-1978, and 1980-1982. Fred was an exclusive member of the “Toppers Cemetery Study Group” from ICCFA.
He founded St. Charles Memorial Gardens Cemetery in 1961. Fred started the cemetery on undeveloped farmland. Over the years he grew it into the area’s first and most beautiful Memorial Gardens type cemetery, serving St. Charles County until his retirement in 1986. Fred continued over the years to serve as a valued consultant to the Baue and St. Charles Memorial Gardens family and staff.
Fred was a former member of the board of directors of Youth in Need for 14 years, from 1992-2006, including serving on the capital campaign in 1992 and the 20th Reunion Committee in 1994. Always an advocate and supporter, he continued to serve with Youth in Need’s advisory Committee for another six years after retiring. He was a member of the St. Charles Lions Club, St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, as well as a member of Bogey Hills Country Club for over 50 years.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife Marion Newman (2011) and his son James Leslie Newman (1976).
