Evelyn Isabel Sterl

July 4, 2020 — July 4, 2020

Evelyn Isabel Sterl of Saint Peters, MO, went to her eternal home in Heaven as she was delivered stillborn on Saturday, July 4, 2020. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Horst Sterl.

During the delivery when Evelyn became visible emerging through the birth canal, her two little hands were cupped together under her chin as if in prayer, but sadly, it was discovered that little Evelyn’s umbilical cord was coiled tightly around a part of her upper body multiple times – it was medically determined this complication with the umbilical cord is what caused her to pass away in the womb before birth.  God’s loving presence and grace was with us in a very real way the whole time and Jesus was truly our Prince of Peace during the grief-stricken days and especially during the moments when baby Evelyn was placed in our arms after delivery.

In all our deep grief and sadness after Evelyn’s delivery, we have also been overwhelmed with a sense of happiness because we finally saw baby Evelyn, that little person, so precious and sweet, our daughter, who had been hidden away in the womb until now.  Elisa and I had many special moments to spend with our daughter Evelyn on the 4th of July, even though she had passed away already, which was so so meaningful and really helped us begin the process of closure.  For the rest of our lives, we also have the gift of a deep joy to cherish and be grateful for – a joy that baby Evelyn brought to us for those almost 9 months of her life.  We knew she was there, our little Evelyn, spending every moment of all those days with us as we loved on her and spoke to her daily there in the womb.  She lived her brief life filling Elisa’s and my life with a sublime fulfillment and a special connection to the most important things in life; faith, hope, remembering to be selfless, family, life itself and especially love.  Elisa and I will press on, by God’s grace, being fully aware that while sad and devastating things happen in this world, we have peace because God is the great Redeemer.

Evelyn is survived by her loving parents, Craig and Elisa Sterl; her grandparents, Henrietta Sterl and Fernando and Claudia Hip; her aunts and uncles, Brian (Andrea) Sterl, Tania (Luke) Sterl-Jackson, Chin "Jaime" Chao, Irma Hip, and Fernando (Joselin) Hip; and her cousin, Mia.  In addition, Evelyn is also survived by many other beloved relatives that Elisa and I love so much and cannot thank God enough for all of their enthusiasm, joy, happiness, prayers and support, and generosity expressed to us and Evelyn during the pregnancy; we know baby Evelyn felt all of your love.  We would also like to thank God for all the close dear friends from all over the world whose encouragement and prayers sustained us throughout the pregnancy – we love and thank you all very much.

Elisa’s and my ultimate faith and trust is in that we have an amazing assurance afforded to us by the resurrection of Jesus that we will one day be wonderfully reunited in Heaven with our precious daughter, Evelyn Isabel.
