Clara E. Scott

March 28, 1924 — October 15, 2016

Clara (Jean) Scott, 92, longtime resident of St. Charles, MO, died on October 15, 2016, following a brief illness. Clara was born Clara Eugenia Welliver in Manning, IA. At a young age, she relocated with her family to Rock Island, IL, where she grew up. Following high school graduation, she enrolled in Nurse Cadet Corps before entering the U.S. Navy. Clara is a veteran of World War II.  She served in the U.S. Navy (WAVES) as a pharmacist mate.

Clara married Robert L. Scott in 1946 and relocated to St. Charles in 1949. She was employed by Ozark Airlines, Stock and Nolle Oil Company, St. Charles County Ambulance District, and retired from McDonnell Douglas in 1984.

During her years in St. Charles, Clara was an avid volunteer in numerous civic and community organizations. She served as a PTA president, a Cub Scout den mother for her two sons, and chaired fundraising efforts for United Way and March of Dimes. Clara was active in church, first at First United Methodist and later at Faith United Methodist, both in St. Charles. She served as a secretary of the St. Charles Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, working at tourism centers and assisting with numerous mailings. She served on the city’s Discovery Parade Committee and participated in the Lewis and Clark Rendezvous. Along with her husband, Clara was active in the St. Charles Optimist Club. She served as its president, served as newsletter editor, was selected as Optimist of the Year, and was recognized for outstanding service to the organization. In 2002, Clara received the “Legends of the Little Hills” award from the St. Charles City Council in recognition for her long-time support and volunteerism in St. Charles. As life-mate to her husband Robert, she was his “right hand woman,” assisting him with his successful run for St. Charles City Council, and offering critical hours of help and support during his many years of service to the Festival of the Little Hills committee. Clara was a member of the St. Charles Historical Society and served on its Board of Directors. She was the society’s president from 1990-1992 and spearheaded several efforts to enhance the society’s viability and storage capability. In recent years, Clara served on the Veteran’s Memorial Committee in St. Charles. She was a life member of Optimist International, VFW Auxiliary, and St. Charles County Historical Society.

Clara was a 20-year breast cancer survivor and participated in several “Race for the Cure” events. Her hobbies included traveling and genealogy. She was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and never missed a game on TV.

Clara was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Robert L. Scott; her sister; and a great-granddaughter.

Clara is survived by her three children: Dan (Roberta) E. Scott of Montgomery, TX, Michael (Marsha) H. Scott of Austin, TX, and Patricia (John) Ezell of Loudon, TN; 6 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

Clara had many great accomplishments throughout her lifetime, but her greatest was her family that she loved profoundly. Clara will be missed by all who knew her.
