Barbara Greene

April 6, 1940 — November 3, 2019

Barbara was born on April 6th, 1940, in the coal mining community of Liggett, KY in Harlan County, and lived in the county seat of Harlan. Her father Jesse worked in the coal mines until the early 1950’s when he moved to Flint, MI to work in the auto industry. The family moved to Flint in 1956 soon after she met her future husband Bobby Greene, who lived near Harlan at another coal mining community at Alva, KY. Barbara finished the last 2 years of high school in Flint. She worked from 1958-60 for Equitable Life Insurance. She married Bob in Flint soon after he graduated from University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY in June 1960. They moved to work in Louisville, KY after the wedding and then to St. Louis, MO in October 1961, residing in St. Charles, MO for 31 years before retiring. Their daughter Chandanais, born in Louisville, was just 8 weeks old when they headed west.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years James Bobby Greene of Wentzville, MO; daughter Chandanais Burlis (James) of St. Charles, MO; son Lawrence Lundy Greene of Lake St. Louis, MO; granddaughter Odessa Fei Burlis of St. Charles, MO; sisters Jessie Lynn Ray (Larry) of Lake Leelanau, MI, Linda Rye (Paul) of Kingston, MI, Gwen Stebbins (James) of Davidson, MI.

Deceased are her parents Jesse and Ailene (Fee) Lundy, and infant sister Lola Martha Lundy.

Retiring in early 1994, Barb and Bob moved to Lake of the Ozarks, living there for 7 years before moving in 2001 to Mountain Home, AR where they lived by Bull Shoals Lake for 13 years returning to St. Charles County (Wentzville) in December 2013.

Barbara accepted Jesus as her savior while living in Flint, MI. Rest assured that Barbara is now in heaven, not because of any of her good works or qualities, but only because of God’s grace through her faith/trust in Jesus Christ’s redeeming bloodshed and death on the cross forgiving her sin, with the hope of eternity in heaven because of Jesus’ resurrection.

Barb served the Lord in various capacities always active in her local church in St. Charles, St. Peters, Camdenton, Promise Land Area in Arkansas, and then back in Wentzville. She loved to work with children. She and others started a kindergarten in 1972, soon changing it to a preschool, at First Baptist Church St. Peters where she was Director/Teacher until 1993, shortly before she and Bob retired. She was an excellent cook. At FBC St. Peters she procured and prepared food with help to serve it for a Wednesday evening dinner at church for 70-120 people each week. This she did for about 5 years after teaching during the day until retiring in 1993.

Barbara’s mother Ailene lived with her and Bob from 1997-2004 and received total devotion from Barbara for her care, including the final 1 ½ years in a nearby nursing home in Mountain Home, AR.

Barb was a master crafter of quilts, embroidery, and cloth garments employing computer operated sewing machines and manual skills. Most of her crafts she gave away to family members and friends, especially small quilts for newborn babies, crafting numerous items over the years. Of late she made small dresses, 50 to date, which are sent to children in Africa, Mexico and Panama with FBC Wentzille missionary teams.

Like her father Jesse, Barbara enjoyed fishing and was pretty good at it. In 1997, Bob bought her a new fishing boat with mauve carpeting for Mother’s Day.

Barbara was a very industrious, giving person of tireless energy. Most of her efforts were doing things for someone else. She never met a stranger.

Barbara was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Memorials may be made in Barbara's name to First Baptist Church of Wentzville, Missouri.
