However, benefits may be reduced if the surviving spouse elects to receive benefits before the age of 65. Surviving spouses can receive regular widow’s benefits as early as age 50 if fully disabled. Widows who are mothers of children under 16 or disabled may alternatively qualify for mother’s benefits even though under 60. Certain surviving divorced wives also may receive benefits.
Monthly payments may be made to surviving spouses and children of retirement of disability beneficiaries. Under certain conditions, a spouse may qualify for benefits equal to 50% of the primary insurance amount. Similarly, children may qualify for 50% of primary insurance in case of disability or retirement of the worker, or 75% in case of death. Payments to dependents and survivors are subject to a statutory family maximum. Certain divorced wives 62 or older may also receive payments.
