 How one chooses to commemorate a loved one is a personal decision. The type of service chosen varies with each family, but one thing is constant: a service provides a focal point for remembering the deceased at the time of death and provides emotional value into the future.
It is important to understand that the need to honor and remember a loved one holds true for all individuals -- including those who choose cremation. With cremation, services and memorialization can take many forms. There is no "standard" cremation service. The choice of service is personal. It should be an event which provides comfort, meaning and closure to you and your family.
Cremation may actually present you with additional options in funeral planning. You can decide whether to have a public or private viewing or no viewing at all. You can choose to have the casketed remains present for the ceremony or to have a memorial ceremony without the casket present. Some individuals may choose to have a viewing followed by a ceremony at a later date and others may wish to have a ceremony in conjunction with the scattering of the cremated remains. The combination of options are limited only to your wishes and the personal needs of your family members.
A cremation service may be a simple gathering or a more formal visitation and funeral service. One may personalize the service with the display of photographs, personal mementos or other items reflecting the individual's life and interests. A video or special music may be played. Readings of poetry or other significant writings may be part of the service. Beautiful floral arrangements or engraved memorials may be selected. Cremation is only the disposition of the deceased for memorialization. Several options for final memorialization exist. One may select to place the cremated remains in an Urn Garden, a Columbarium Niche, a cremation bench or to keep the urn at home. One may also consider burial of the cremated remains in a cemetery or family burial site. Scattering cremated remains is an option which merits a great deal of consideration. It must be done in accordance to state and local laws.
